LOCAL ATTRACTIONS with personal recommendations

Salisbury is renowned for its magnificent Cathedral and the world heritage sight of Stonehenge. Salisbury also has the advantage of being within easy distance of many other places of interest. The historic city of Bath, the Cathedral City of Winchester , Old Wardour Castle, The New Forest (with the ponies roaming wild), and Avebury Stone circle to name a few.

Stonehenge

STONEHENGE
Just 10 miles north of Salisbury (the bus stop is almost outside our house!) lies the world Heritage site of Stonehenge. Erected about 4000 years ago and a triumphant achievement of its time, the methods used still beg many questions.

For the energetic I would recommend an excellent walk over the Downs, approaching Stonehenge from the South. This approach adds to the mystique of a visit to this ancient monument. I can show you the less direct but picturesque route by the river Avon dotted with English country houses and beautiful countryside.

SALISBURY CATHEDRAL
There are many photographs of Salisbury Cathedral but nothing can prepare you for its magnificence. Probably the finest medieval building in Britain built between 1220 - 1258 with the highest spire in the UK at 123 metres. The Cathedral houses the oldest working clock and an original copy of the Magna Carta, the English bill of rights.

I would recommend taking a tour of the spire! A strenuous climb but rewarded by the breathtaking views. If you can combine your visit to the Cathedral with a service and to hear the magnificent choir you will appreciate the Cathedral as it was intended.

Old-Sarum

OLD SARUM
Old Sarum the massive Iron Age hill fort lies one mile north of Kinvara House - 20 minute walk. The site contains the ruins of the Castle, Cathedral and Royal Palace.

I can recommend a wonderful walk back from old Sarum to Kinvara House by the river Avon. A wild life conservation area and a haven for bird lovers. You may spot a Kingfisher or Snowy Egret!

WILTON HOUSE
Just 15 minutes drive from Salisbury, Wilton House is the 450 year old stately home of the 18th Earl of Pembroke. Set in magnificent landscaped parkland. The state rooms retain their original grandeur housing a world famous art collection including works of Van Dyck, Reynolds, Brueghel and Rembrandt. The house was recently used as the set for the film ‘The Young Victoria’

I love the Old Riding School cafe. The food is simple but freshly cooked. The Wilton House Garden Centre is also worth a visit. For shopping enthusiasts opposite Wilton House is the Wilton Shopping Village and famous Wilton carpet factory. A little retail therapy to round off the day!
